Arts.
Long Island City, Queens, NY. Although known in the past for its industrial roots, LIC has repositioned itself as an artistic and cultural community, truly a neighborhood on the rise. LIC’s cultural highlights include 200 museums and galleries, such as MoMa (Museum of Modern Art), PS1 an affiliate of MoMa, Naguchi Museum, Socrates’ Sculpture Park, The Museum of the Moving Image, The Museum of African Art, The Sculpture Center, 5 Points, and countless others.

Business.
L.I.C. was named The Next “It” Neighborhood by New York Magazine, who attributes its emerging success to the neighborhood’s financial as well as its cultural persona. As such, some of the world’s most significant establishments call it home. Among them are CitiGroup/Citibank’s headquarters, MetLife, Silvercup Studios, and soon the new United Nations Credit Union. Located just one stop across the East River, LIC offers the vibe and vitality that have sparked commercial interest from Viacom International, Paramount Pictures, MTV, and VH1. In fact, plans for nearly five million square feet of commercial and retail space (to be completed by 2010) have been submitted. Highlights will include , sidewalks, bike lanes , a new school, and a library.

Development.
World class real estate developers are increasingly taking note of LIC’s emergence. Rockrose Development, one of the nation’s largest real estate companies intends to build ‘East Coast NY’, a mixed-use development, to include 3000 residential units and over 120,000 sq. ft. of retail space. Rockrose also plans to create 22 acres of parkland. Other developers have followed suit. Currently, more than 30 residential projects—10,000 new homes—are slated to arrive by 2010. Condos will average $700+ per foot and rentals will go for about $30-$40 dollars per foot.

Nightlife.
Retail on the main shopping drag of Vernon Blvd is quickly being snatched up by restaurants, bars, and boutiques who are lucky enough to become part of the action. Court Square, located in the vicinity of CitiGroup’s 44-story tower is turning into a major business center with more office buildings and amenities to come. The City of New York has announced plans to turn Long Island City into the 4th largest business district in New York City, and they are offering such benefits as real estate tax abatements and tax incentives for companies and business that pay up to $3000 for every new job created per year.
