Sagaponack is a tiny village in Southampton, which was only incorporated into its own entity recently in 2005. Although the population is very small (582 people, as of a 2000 census), it is a very wealthy area, with some of the most high-end prices in the country. It has become a very desirable area due to its quaint charm and gorgeous beachfront properties.
Saganponack’s name derives from the Native American tribe, Shinnecock’s word for “land of the big ground nuts,” which is how they described potatoes, the farming of which continued through to the end of the last century. Josiah Stanborough first settled the town in 1656, calling it, “Sagg.”
The town’s main attraction, its beach, is still dubbed Sagg Main Beach. The truly lovely beach boasts a concession stand, showers, and restrooms. People can go to the local Sagaponack General Store, a delicatessen-cum-post-office, in order to pick up supplies, mail, and to even have picnic lunch baskets arranged for them, to bring to the beach.
Though the sleepy little town has few stores, local food shopping can be done at Casales Flower & Farmstand, which sells only locally grown and produced products such as farm produce and flowers, along with sandwiches and wine, and Loaves and Fishes, a gourmet food store.
Sagaponack is also home to a museum, The Madoo Conservancy. Designed by artist Robert Dash, this beautiful garden was grown on two acres. The artist’s multiple studios are also located here, along with a collection of buildings, sheds, and sculptures. Other delightful surprises include an Oriental bridge and an enchanting bench, painted purple and gold, with wheels on each end.
Wine enthusiasts also have the choice of two wineries to visits, the SagPond Vineyards, and the Wolffer Estate, which has been around since 1987. It is designed to resemble an Italian villa, with stucco walls, ivy, a patio, and a courtyard with a fountain. It offers visitors a tasting room that overlooks a view of the wine vats, as well as a museum of antique wine jugs and glasses, and an art gallery.
Although there are no hotels in Sagaponack proper, tourists can stay at a number of places in local Wainscott.
