Description

Art Dealer’s historic late 17th Century house in one of Deptford’s best spots, a stone’s throw from Deptford High Street, the area’s heart and hub, and within close proximity to the river and West Greenwich, with its UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Through careful restoration and remodelling, the Grade II listed property has been transformed into an extraordinary space by highly-respected architects Dow Jones (http://dowjonesarchitects.com/). Completed in 2012, the result was described as “exemplary” by Jay Merrick of The Independent, in his feature on the house for The Architects’ Journal. The three storey, three double bedroom terraced house was awarded the prestigious RIBA London Regional Award in 2013, and was also shortlisted for the Stephen Lawrence Prize.

The ground floor incorporates three reception areas, a double-height kitchen with a part-glazed ceiling, plus notable hardwood cabinets and polished concrete worktops, an independent larder and a courtyard, suntrap garden. A WC, utility and large storage areas have also been seamlessly incorporated.

Great features include the bespoke hardwood carpentry, the polished concrete floor to the ground floor (the upper floors have many of their original floor timbers), the floor to ceiling glazed walls onto the courtyard – some of which slide open – and the wall of exposed original lime plaster and timber joinery; the pigment mostly originating from the early C18th. The walk-in larder is a winner too, it sits behind original brick walls, once Victorian stables. While the house is imbued with history, this is very much a C21st dwelling with impeccable architectural detail. The house is fully alarmed and every room is wired for TV/phone/Internet.

As downstairs, every effort has been taken to honour the period features of the upper floors. On the first floor, two timber-floored, double bedrooms sit front and back, both leading onto a central shower room with top notch sanitary ware. The second floor is a bedroom suite, with dressing room and impressive bathroom, featuring a gorgeous C19th copper bath.

Deptford and New Cross are two of south London’s hottest addresses, with incredible transport links and cultural offerings. Deptford and New Cross stations are both within a 5 minute walk (New Cross is on the London Overground network), and Deptford Bridge DLR is even closer, making a Canary Wharf commute a doddle.

This area boasts great local galleries, bars, pubs and restaurants. Deptford is also home to St Paul’s, Deptford – one of London’s finest Baroque parish churches, cited as “one of the most moving C18 churches in London” in the Buildings of England series. You are but a 15 minute walk from The Maritime Greenwich UNESCO World Heritage Site – comprising the historic town centre, the beautiful Royal Park and the related institutional buildings. The Royal Observatory is a must-go-to and the views at the top of the park, looking onto The Thames and beyond, are really something. Deptford High Street is super local and thriving (we particularly like The Winemarkers Club and The Job Centre), with regular markets and handy shops. Depftford Market Yard has been most recently developed and has some great independent businesses including Little Nan’s Bar. For local cafe culture, check out London Velo and Deli X. Of an evening, Curzon at Goldsmiths, Deptford Cinema and Greenwich Picturehouse (Rivington Bar & Grill is lovely and next door) are all a short walk away. Peckham and Camberwell are also close for further options.
