Frederic and Almy Gallatin (descendants of Albert Gallatin, Thomas Jefferson's Secretary of the Treasury) used the Maidstone property as a horse pasture. They gifted the land to the town with the legal stipulation that it remain a public park forever, keeping the name "Maidstone Park," and allowing no commercial concessions. Maidstone Park and its adjacent Maidstone Beach on Gardiner’s Bay serve as a quiet, friendly community area for swimming, clamming, and picnicking in the historic Springs arts enclave.
