Fort Greene:
Historic Fort Greene is known for its quiet tree-lined blocks and its namesake park. But before those beautiful brownstones and even the park, the area was the site of an actual fort during the Revolutionary War. Architectural and historical artifacts such as the Prison Ship Martyrs’ Monument in Fort Greene Park, serve as a reminder of the area’s military past.
These days, Fort Greene is a trendy, yet community driven neighborhood that is marked by its ethnic diversity and local pride. This family-friendly neighborhood boasts some of Brooklyn’s most beautiful tree-lined blocks with its signature iconic Brooklyn brownstones and carriages houses. The neighborhood is defined by Atlantic Avenue to the South, Flushing Avenue to the North, with Clermont Avenue and Flatbush Extension to its East and West, respectively.
For over 9 years, residents enjoyed the convenience of having a weekly flea market in the area. Brooklyn Flee, founded by Jonathan Butler and Eric Demby, has moved, but Fort Greene still boasts some of the borough’s most renowned cultural institutions. A weekend in Fort Greene can include a dance or theatre show at the prestigious Brooklyn Academy of Music or a visit to beautiful Fort Greene Park for a game of tennis. Dekalb Avenue is the area’s restaurant row that includes diverse options such as Madiba, a South African restaurant and Colonia Verde, which hosts its weekly “Sunday Pig Roast”. After dinner you could take a stroll over to the Barclays Center to enjoy a nighttime concert.
For media lovers who want to create, the neighborhood is home to BRIC, located on Fulton St., which is a center where aspiring broadcasters and local producers can hone their skills as television producers, and even air their own content on the borough’s access TV station. The neighborhood is also home to Director Spike Lee’s production house, and most recently, the neighborhood served as the set to the recent Netflix reboot of his iconic 1988 movie, “She’s Gotta Have It.”
While the area has seen a recent growth in new development, Fort Green Real Estate is still marked by its single and multifamily brownstones and townhouses. According to Brick Underground, studio co-ops are up to $450,000; one-bedrooms up to 750,000, and two-bedrooms are in the $700,000 to $1.2 million range. One-bedroom condos range from $600,000 to $900,000, and two-bedrooms are up to $1.8 million. Townhouses can run from $2 to $5 million. The average rent in Fort Greene is $3400.
Commuters in Fort Greene enjoy a number of train options. Not only does the Q train service the neighborhood full time on DeKalb Avenue, commuters who live here are a short stroll to Atlantic-Barclays Terminal– a major transportation hub that has access to the B, D, N, Q, R, 2, 3, 4 &5 trains.
